Cellular Signaling - MED 815

Ementa:

Discussion of basic concepts related to inter-and intracellular signaling, such as drug-receptor interaction, receptor coupled to ion channels or G-protein regulation by phosphorylation, kinase cascades. Thereafter, students present seminars on recent work to be discussed by the group, comprising critical analysis of techniques used, results and conclusions.

Ementa:

Introduction to molecular aspects of pre-synaptic neurotransmission. Mechanisms of action of drugs and toxins that affect the nervous system. The course will focus on the role of neurotransmitters and the regulation of synaptic function by drugs. There will be discussion of scientific papers and demonstration of techniques used to study mechanisms controlling neurotransmitter release.

Each student prepares and delivers a seminar based on the literature and discusses presentations by other students, as part of their training teaching skills. Seminars are mandatory to all graduate students who receive grants from CAPES (according to CAPES Ordinance nº 64, 18 de novembro 2002). Every other semester, these seminars are in English.
