This document is an example of our selection process.
The Coordinator of the Post-Graduation Program in Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine, School of Medicine, Federal University of Minas Gerais, in exercise of his function, notifies that, from xx to xx/xx/xxxx, the registrations of candidates to the selection process will be open for the MASTER and DOCTORAL programs. The registrations can be done in person or by simple attorney, at the Post-Graduation Center of the School of Medicine, located at Professor Alfredo Balena Avenue, 190, 5o floor, room 503 – Center – Belo Horizonte – Minas Gerais, Brazil – Zip code: 30130-100, from monday until friday, except holidays and school recess, between 08h30 to 11h30, where additional information may be provided. Registrations will be also accepted by SEDEX, since posted until the xx/xx/xxxx, with all documentation required. The address for posting is the same as for the registrations in person. The candidates approved must present a document certifying the English knowledge until xx/xx/xxxx, according to the description in the item VI of this edital. The presentation of such certificate is a requirement for admission in the post-graduate program.
I – Vacancies. It will be offered xx places for the Masters and xx places for the Doctoral Degrees for admission in the first semester of xxxx. If the vacancies offered to the doctorate are not filled in this selection process, a new selection may occur in a continuous flow regimen, on dates to be announced on the School of Medicine Post-Graduation Center website, up to 30 days in advance of the selection process.
II – Requirements for registration. Upon registration, the candidate must present in person or by simple attorney, the following documents:
a) completed application form, available on the Post-Graduation Center website;
b) one recent 3×4 photograph;
c) copy (front and back) of the graduation diploma in Medicine or in another graduation course related with the health field, in the judgment of the Program Board, provided by an establishment that should be official or officially recognized by MEC, or a document attesting that the candidate will be able to graduate before the period for academic record, getting such registration conditioned to the graduation proof;
d) copy of the transcript of the graduation course;
e) copy of the transcript of the masters course (for the doctorate candidates);
f) copy of personal documents: identity card issued by the Department of Public Safety, birth or marriage certificate, individual registration (CPF) or CRM and proof of address;
g) for Brazilian candidates, electoral discharge certificate dated from the last election, to be obtained in http://www.tse.jus.br/eleitor/certidoes/certidao-de-quitacao-eleitoral;
h) for male Brazilian candidates, a copy of reservist certificate or other document proving the discharge of military obligations;
i) for foreign candidates, copies of the documents required by specific legislation: proof of being in compliance with the Federal Migration Service (copy of valid passport with the identification and entry visa in Brazil);
j) one printed copy of the Lattes CNPq curriculum available in http://lattes.cnpq.br/;
k) one printed copy of each published work, supporting documents of educational monitoring, scientific research, specialization courses, among others, if any, bound separately from the curriculum;
l) one printed copy of the research project for doctoral candidates;
m) one printed copy of the research pre-project for master candidates.
n) one copy in pdf format of the project or pre-project recorded on CD. The documents should comprise a maximum of 15 pages and must mandatorily present the following items: cover sheet, which does not count as a page, containing the title of the project or pre-project and indication of the related research line. The list of the Program’s research lines is available on the website https://www.medicina.ufmg.br/cpginfectologia/linhas-de-pesquisa/. Next: justification and relevance of the project or pre-project; general and specific objectives; material and methods; feasibility of research execution and conclusion within 24 (twenty four) months for the masters and up to 48 (forty-eight) months for the doctorate; description of the potential scientific and social impacts and the products generated in the study, such as scientific articles and patents to be produced with the project development. There can be no candidate identification in the project or pre-project, under penalty of disqualification of the selection process.
p) in the CD containing the project or pre-project, it is necessary to include the electronic files of the Lattes CNPq curriculum and of the published works, as well as documents supporting the educational monitoring, scientific research, specialization courses, among others, if any, according to items “j” and ” k ” .
Candidates presenting special care must indicate on the registration form the special conditions necessary for their participation in the selection process. Incomplete documentation will not be received, as well projects/pre-projects that are not in accordance with the item “n” described above. Applications submitted after the deadline also will not be accepted.
III – Examination Board. Two examination boards will be created, one for the master and one for the doctorate. Each Board shall consist of at least three Faculty members linked to Post-Graduation Programs certified by CAPES, and all with a doctor title, which will be appointed by the Board of this program. The nominal list of the Examination Board members will be disclosed in the Program website within 48 hours before the start of the selection process, together with the declaration of no impediment and/or suspicion of the members in each Board.
IV – Selection Process. The selection process will take place in three phases and will occur at the School of Medicine. Appeals against results of the first and second phases will be possible, with suspensive effect, without prejudice to the final outcome. The result of the third phase will be published along with the final result. The partial and final appeals will be directed to the Program Coordination and delivered in person or by attorney in the Post-Graduation Center between 08h.30 and 11h.30.
Phase 1. Evaluation of the project/pre-project. This phase will have an eliminatory and classificatory character with a total amount of one hundred (100) points. To be approved, the project or pre-project must obtain at least 70% of the points. The following criteria will be examined: clarity and quality of the objectives proposed in the project/pre-project (20 points); correlation between the methodology and the objectives proposed in the project/pre-project (20 points); project/pre-project feasibility of execution within the deadline(20 points); scientific impact, such as the publication of scientific articles and other products, with the possibility of internationalization and interaction with research groups from abroad (20 points); relevance and related research line of the project/pre-project (20 points). The result of this phase will be announced on the wall of the Post-Graduation Center, 5th floor of the School of Medicine, until 5 pm on xx/xx/xxxx. Only candidates with approved projects/ pre-projects will be evaluated in the next step.
Phase 2. Oral presentation of the project/pre-project, followed by questioning. This step will have an eliminatory and classificatory character, with a total amount of one hundred (100) points. To be approved, candidates must obtain at least 70% of the points. The following items will be considered: quality of visual presentation (10 points); degree of the candidate’s participation in the design and development of the project/pre-project (20 points); synthesis capacity, discussion and expression of the project/pre-project objectives (25 points); rationale, design, methodological structure and knowledge of the scientific and technical content of the project/pre-project (25 points); innovation, feasibility and originality of the project/pre-project (20 points). The scale for oral presentations will be disclosed in the wall of the Post-Graduation Center, until 5 pm on xx/xx/xxxx. The presentations will be conducted between xx and xx/xx/xxxx, from 08h00 am to 06h.00 pm. The missing candidates will be eliminated from the selection process. The result of the second phase will be disclosed in the wall of the Post-Graduation Centre, until 5 pm on xx/xx/xxxx. Only candidates approved in this step will be evaluated in the next phase.
Phase 3. Curriculum Lattes and Transcripts evaluation. This step will be classificatory, but not eliminatory, and with a total amount of one hundred (100) points. For the master’s degree, the following items will be analyzed: academic performance in graduation by evaluation of the academic record (5 points); educational monitoring, teaching and/or professional experience and medical residency (20 points); participation as a member in teaching, extension and/or research projects (5 points); scientific initiation program with a scholarship and/or volunteer (20 points); participation in national and/or international relevance in the area of study (5 points); free theme, abstracts or full works presentations in scientific meetings of national and/or international relevance in the area of study (15 points); scientific publications, such as complete articles in indexed journals (15 points); specialization and/or technical and scientific experience in the project or pre-project area (10 points); courses studied in the stricto sensu Post-Graduation Programs recognized by CAPES (5 points). For the doctoral degree, the following items will be analyzed: academic performance in the Master’s degree with evaluation of academic records (10 points); participation as a team member in teaching, extension and/or research projects (10 points); Master’s works published in indexed journals (15 points); other scientific articles published in indexed journals in the project area (20 points); participation scientific conferences of national and/or international relevance the area of study (5 points); free theme, abstracts or full works presentations in regional, national and/or international meetings in the area of study (15 points); professional experience, medical residency and/or technical and scientific experience in the project or pre-project area (10 points); teaching experience, guidance and/or co-supervision of undergraduate research students with scholarship and/or voluntary (10 points); awards, titles, honors or other distinctions (5 points). For scoring purposes, to the candidate receiving the best assessment at this step will be given 100 (one hundred) points and the others will have their points calculated according to this ratio.
The result of the 3rd phase will be published together with the final result of the selection process in the wall of the Post-Graduation Center, located in the 5th floor of the School of Medicine.
The non-participation of the candidate in any step of the selection process will result in elimination.
V – Final Result. The final scores of the candidates will be calculated by taking the arithmetic average of the points obtained in the three phases: (1) evaluation of the project/pre-project; (2) oral presentation of the project/pre-project followed by questioning, and (3) evaluation of the Lattes curriculum and academic records. Candidates for the master’s and doctoral degrees will be classified in descending sequence according to the final grade with the results indication: “approved and classified”, “approved, but unclassified” or “reproved”. Approved and classified candidates will be admitted within the limit of vacancies described in Section I. In the case of a tie between candidates, the following criteria will be analyzed in this order: (1) highest score in the oral presentation and questioning, (2) highest score in the evaluation of the project/pre-project (3) highest score in the evaluation of Lattes curriculum and academic transcripts.
The final result with the scores of each step and with the candidates ranking in the descending order of calculated averages will be disclosed until 5pm on xx/xx/xxxx. The results will not be provided by phone, fax or email, and all the candidates, including those from other cities, must look in the wall of the Post-Graduation Center or in the Program website, where the final result will be announced.
The deadline for appeals will be until ten (10) days after the date of the final result publication, as determined by the UFMG General Regulations. During this period, the candidate may have access to their respective scores of each step, upon request to the Coordination. The documentation of “approved but not classified” or “reproved” candidates may be withdrawn at the Post-Graduation Center, between xx/xx/xxxx and xx/xx/xxxx. After that, documents may be eliminated.
VI – Registration. The approved and classified candidates must perform, exclusively on the internet, from xx to xx/xx/xxxx, their Preliminary Registration by filling out a form available on https://sistemas.ufmg.ca/cadastroprevio. The DRCA will take steps to perform the Academic Registry after receiving the complete documentation of the candidates in the required form (legible copies without erasures), and after the Preliminary Registration by the approved candidates. Full documentation will be sent to the DRCA by the Post-Graduation secretariat until xx/xx/xxxx. The candidate who has submitted, during the registration period, documentary evidence to be able to complete the undergraduate degree before the period of academic registration, must deliver the document attesting the graduation in the Post-Graduation Center until xx/xx/xxxx. It will not be accepted statements with estimated date of graduation. In case of undergraduate degree completed abroad it must be submitted a copy of the graduation certificate with authentication seal and translation into Portuguese, except those issued in Spanish, English and French. Foreign candidates must submit to the Post-Graduation Center until xx/xx/xxxx, the National Registry of Foreigners – RNE, or passport Permanent Visa or valid temporary student Visa, as well as documents proving affiliation and others to be informed by the course Secretariat.
In compliance to the Resolution No. 08/2008 of October 14, 2008 from the Board of Education, Research and Extension of UFMG, the candidates approved in the selection process must prove, through certification, their English proficiency until xx/xx/xxxx. The presentation of the Proficiency Certificate until this date is mandatory for entering in the course.
The English proficiency must be demonstrated by presenting one of the following proofs: (i) the approval certificate of Cenex/FALE/UFMG according Resolution No. 08/2008 from CEPS/UFMG, performed in the last 3 (three) years for the area 1: Biological Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Health Sciences. Candidates interested in getting the Cenex/FALE/UFMG certificate must do their application for the specific English language test in the area 1: Biological Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Health Sciences in the period between xx and xx/xx/xxxx, according to the instructions available on the Cenex/Fale/UFMG website www.letras.ufmg.br/cenex where the candidate will also be informed about the test (procedures, dates, cost, among others). The tests results will be announced between xx and xx/xx/xxxx by Cenex/FALE/UFMG; (ii) TOEFL(Test of English as a Foreign Language); (iii) TOEIC(Test of English for International Communication); (iv) IELTS(International English Language Testing System); (V) FCE, CAE, CPE from University of Cambridge; (vi) Michigan proficiency certificates in English or other documents internationally recognized, whose tests have been conducted in the last five years, will be accept; (vii) The doctoral candidate may use the foreign language examination presented for the Masters degree registration, if any, in stricto sensu Post-Graduate program recognized by Capes, if performed in the last five years, and with an average of at least 60%.
According to the art. 39, § 2 from the UFMG General Regulations, “each candidate shall have a single academic record, corresponding to a single place on the course that was admitted”. The candidate automatically loses the place and will be considered formally eliminated if the Prior Registration is not done on the date determined for performing this procedure or if any of the documents requested are not submitted. The vacancies filling due to these situations will be occupied by other candidates, according the descending order of classification, until the deadline for documentation submission to DRCA. The registration of approved candidates will be held in the Academic System of Post-Graduation, in a date to be disclosed, according the UFMG academic calendar.
